Facebook really is it's own world. When you try to understand how Facebook tools would work, it can become a bit problematic.
I noticed an odd thing in one of my grad classes last semester. A professor apologized to one of my colleagues on the first day for refusing a friend request. My first thought was "why would you even consider friending a professor?" But it's not uncommon apparently. In my position a study-abroad internship program, I think it's vital to friend my students to keep an eye on them.
But it's more of a struggle for most professors I think. If they choose to friend students, they may get a better sense of what their students are struggling with academically and have a better chance to help but they also risk having to much information about a students personal life. In school's with a behavioral code, knowing that kind of information can place you in some odd situations.
